Coming together for the Great Lakes

The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition consists of more than 180 environmental, conservation, and outdoor recreation organizations; zoos, aquariums, and museums. Our member organizations represent millions of people who share a common goal: restoring and protecting North America’s greatest freshwater resources, the Great Lakes.


Regional or National

Abiinooji-Aki –  Abiinooji-Aki Inc. is a Native American 501c3 offering programs in an Ojibwe cultural setting that are unique and culturally sensitive for individuals all around the country, specifically the four states of MN, MI, IL, and WI.

Illinois Division of the Izaak Walton League - Our chapter's primary interests are focused on local clean water issues, including watershed and wetlands protection. We advocate sustainable living and encourage outdoor users to protect our valuable natural resources while they continue to enjoy the great outdoors.

Illinois Environmental Council – To ensure a healthful environment for Illinois residents through advocacy and coalition building.

Friends of the St. Joe River Association, Inc. – To unite a diverse group of stakeholders in a collaborative effort to protect, restore and foster stewardship of the St. Joseph River Watershed as a critical component of the Great Lakes Basin.

Griffith Izaak Walton League of America – To conserve, restore, and promote the sustainable use and enjoyment of our natural resources, including soil, air, woods, waters, and wildlife.

Hoosier Environmental Council – To make Indiana a better place to live, breathe, work, and play.

Indiana Division of the Izaak Walton League of America – To conserve, restore, and promote the sustainable use and enjoyment of our natural resources, including soil, air, woods, waters, and wildlife.

Indiana Dunes Tourism – Promoting the Indiana Dunes and the great communities throughout Porter County to potential visitors.

Indiana Wildlife Federation – To promote the conservation, sound management, and sustainable use of Indiana’s wildlife and wildlife habitat through education, advocacy, and action.

Just Transition Northwest Indiana - Bringing communities together across Northwest Indiana to demand what we all need–clean water, clean air, and clean soil–without sacrificing the good-paying jobs folks can raise a family on.

League of Women Voters of Indiana – Serving the people of the state of Indiana.

Northwest Indiana Paddling Association – Developing the region’s paddling resources and opportunities, providing environmental stewardship of the region’s waterways, education, and to be a link between the region’s paddlers.

Northwest Indiana Steelheaders – Educating the general public and promoting anadromous sport fishing in the Great Lakes and their tributary streams and rivers.

Save the Dunes – To preserve, protect and restore the Indiana dunes and all natural resources in Northwest Indiana’s Lake Michigan Watershed for an enhanced quality of life.

BaySail-Appledore Schooners – Providing unique sailing experiences to the public and for educational voyages.

Clean Water Action – Michigan – To protect our environment, health, economic well-being and community quality of life.

Clinton River Watershed Council – Dedicated to protecting, enhancing and celebrating the Clinton River, its watershed and Lake St. Clair.

Conservation Resource Alliance - We restore and protect over 700 miles of rivers, 5,000 miles of tributaries & diverse forests throughout 4 million acres in Northwest Lower Michigan.

Cranbrook Institute of Science – A natural history and science museum that fosters in its audiences a passion for understanding the world around them and a lifelong love of learning.

Dwight Lydell Chapter of the Izaak Walton League – To conserve, maintain, protect and restore the soil, forest, water and other natural resources of the United States and other lands.

Ecology Center – To develop innovative solutions for healthy people and a healthy planet.

Flint River Watershed Coalition - A membership organization that promotes citizen stewardship of our natural resources by providing our members with the sources, knowledge, and capacity necessary to protect local water quality and watershed habitat.

Friends of the Detroit River – Envisioning an ever improving quality of life for people, plants and animals in southeast Michigan and southwest Ontario.

Friends of the St. Clair – To inspire citizen action through monitoring, education and stewardship to restore, protect and enhance the St. Clair River and its watersheds

Genesee County Hispanic Latino Collaborative – La Placita – To advocate for the Hispanic-Latino populations in Genesee County in the areas of education, cultural awareness and social needs.

Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities – Collaborating respectfully with citizens and leaders to protect everything we love about Michigan.

Huron Pines – At the core of all of our work is a goal to teach and instill a conservation ethic in the hearts of people across Michigan and beyond and to make our communities better places to live, work and enjoy.

Huron River Watershed Council – To protect and restore the Huron River for healthy and vibrant communities.

International Association for Great Lakes Research – A scientific organization made up of researchers studying the Laurentian Great Lakes, other large lakes of the world, and their watersheds, as well as those with an interest in such research.

John Ball Zoological Gardens/John Ball Zoo Society – Inspiring our community to be actively engaged in the conservation of wildlife and our natural environment.

Kalamazoo River Cleanup Coalition – To educate the public regarding the cleanup of the Kalamazoo River superfund site

Kalamazoo River Protection Association – Committed to restoring the recreational and tourism potential of the Kalamazoo River.

Kalamazoo River Sturgeon for Tomorrow – To support the reestablishment and maintenance of a healthy, self-sustaining Lake Sturgeon population in the Kalamazoo River.

League of Women Voters of Michigan – A nonpartisan political organization, dedicated to making democracy work through voter education. Issue advocacy, and citizen participation.

Michigan Audubon Society – Connecting birds and people for the benefit of both through conservation, education, and research efforts in the state of Michigan.

Michigan Council of Trout Unlimited – To conserve, protect, and restore Michigan’s coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.

Michigan Environmental Council – Driving the environmental agenda in Michigan.

Michigan League of Conservation Voters Education Fund – Nonpartisan political organization in Michigan protecting your land, air, and water.

Michigan United Conservation Clubs – To unite citizens to conserve, protect, and enhance Michigan’s natural resources and outdoor heritage.

Michigan Wildlife Conservancy – To restore and conserve fish, wildlife, and habitat throughout the state and teach others to do the same.

Middle Grand River Organization of Watersheds – To protect and preserve the history and the natural resources of the Middle Grand River watershed by promoting education, conservation, restoration, and wise use of watershed resources.

Mona Lake Watershed Council – To restore, protect, and maintain for future generations the Mona Lake Watershed as a viable natural resource and to inspire attitudes, awareness, behavior, and knowledge through the use of science and education.

Northern Initiatives – Providing loans to small business owners and entrepreneurs in Northern Michigan that might not qualify for loans from traditional banks for a variety of reasons.

Sierra Club Michigan – Great Lakes Program – To explore, enjoy, and protect the planet.

Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision - To improve the environment and strengthen the economy of Southwest Detroit.

Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council – Protecting our lakes, streams, wetlands, and groundwater through respected advocacy, innovative education, technically sound water quality monitoring, thorough research, and restoration actions.

Wastewater Education 501(c) 3 – To increase awareness that water quality is directly linked to the use of appropriate wastewater systems and their management.

Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay – Advocates for clean water in Grand Traverse Bay and acts to protect and preserve the Bay’s watershed.

We the People of Detroit – dedicated to community coalition building and to the provision of resources that inform, train and mobilize the citizens of Detroit to improve their quality of life.

West Michigan Environmental Action Council – To inform, engage and nurture an inclusive community acting together to protect natural resources, mitigate climate impacts and build a resilient West Michigan.

Citizen Science Community Resources - We were founded to inspirit residents to fight for their health and environment, after using community based citizen science against a local foundry coke plant, called Tonawanda Coke Corp. (TCC).

Coalition on West Valley Nuclear Wastes - For 30 years, The Coalition on West Valley Nuclear Wastes has been the citizen's watchdog group working to ensure the safety of future generations.

Environmental Advocates of New York – To protect our air, land, water, and wildlife and the health of all New Yorkers.

Genesee River Watch – To champion solutions that improve the water quality of the Genesee and initiatives that connect people to the River.

Genesee Valley Audubon Society - To educate and advocate for protection of the environment, focusing on birds, wildlife and habitat.

League of Women Voters of New York – Making democracy work.

New York State Division of the Izaak Walton League - To conserve, restore, and promote the sustainable use and enjoyment of our natural resources, including soil, air, woods, waters, and wildlife.

New York State Zoo – To providing natural world experiences that foster an appreciation of the Empire State’s ecosystems through conservation, education, scientific study and responsible recreation.

NYPIRG - A non-partisan, nonprofit, research and public education organization. NYPIRG was founded in 1976 as an independent 501(c)(3) public outreach and education sister organization to the New York Public Interest Research Group.

Onondaga Audubon – To engender in Central and Northern New Yorkers a greater appreciation for their land, water, and other natural resources, and to increase respect for the wildlife that inhabits these places, especially birds.

Residents for Responsible Government – Dedicated to informing residents in the Towns of Porter and Lewiston in Niagara County, NY, about the threats of PCBs and hazardous waste in the community.

Save the River – To protect and preserve the ecological integrity of the Upper St. Lawrence River through advocacy, education, and research.

Seneca Park Zoo – Inspiring our community to connect, care for, and conserve wildlife and wild places.

Georgian Bay Eco Museum - Brings together a greater respect for the ecology and the environment along with tourist and visitor experiences throughout the Georgian Bay region and the watersheds feeding into Georgian Bay

Georgian Bay Forever – Funding and supporting scientific research and education that protects and enhances the waters of Georgian Bay, as part of the Great Lakes.

Nature Quebec – To conserve nature, to maintain ecosystems essential for life, and to encourage the sustainable use of resources.
