Tell Senators to Fully Fund Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

HEALING OUR WATERS® – GREAT LAKES COALITION

ACTION ALERT

TELL SENATORS TO FULLY FUND GREAT LAKES RESTORATION INITIATIVE

BACKGROUND: This week a House Appropriations subcommittee is expected to approve funding for a new Great Lakes Restoration Initiative at close to the level proposed by President Obama – $475 million. The funding may be in jeopardy in the Senate. Senators from outside the Great Lakes basin now may be eyeing the Great Lakes funding for other priorities. Senator Feinstein, the chairwoman of the Interior-EPA funding subcommittee, is critical to fully funding the President’s initiative. She’s drafting the EPA’s funding bill now and her subcommittee is expected to vote on the matter the week of June 15. Your action is timely and urgent!

TAKE ACTION: Please call your Senators today and urge them to contact Senator Feinstein to let her know that funding the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative at the full $475 million is a top priority.

Please do the following:

1) Call your two U.S. Senators. You can reach them through their direct line or by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and asking to be connected. If you have a relationship with a legislative aid for the Senator you are calling, ask for that person. If not speak to whomever answers the phone.

2) Tell the staff person, “President Obama has included a $475 million Great Lakes Restoration initiative in his fiscal year 2010 budget and the House is poised to approve funding on par with the President’s proposal. This funding will create jobs and restore the health of our treasured Great Lakes. I urge Senator _______ to tell Senator Feinstein that appropriating the full $475 million for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is a top priority.”

3) Let us know what kind of response you get by adding a comment to this post.
