GL Govs Call for White House Summit After Court Punts on Lock Closure

The US Supreme Court did not call for the closing of the locks to keep the Asian Carp out of Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes ecosystem. While they rejected Michigan’s injunction they did not decide if they will hear the case that now has the backing of New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Ontario in Canada. Immediately following the announcement, the Great Lakes Governors asked for a meeting with the US President and White House staff.

If a Summit is granted, the Great Lakes Governors intend to ask that the locks be closed while a long-term solution – most likely a hydrological separation of the basins – is worked out. The Administration has shown support for stopping the Carp with an infusion of cash when the eDNA was found just miles from the entrance to Lake Michigan. But they also filed a friend of the court brief in support of Illinois and against closure of the locks. I’m not sure where that leaves us but sure hope that the White House will grant a meeting with our Governors to determine the best way forward in fighting off the Asian Carp.
