The St. Lawrence River water might look OK and taste OK, but don’t eat the fish! Right where the river meets Lake Ontario, New York State’s Department of Health has warned residents to avoid eating fish or duck because it could cause birth defects, learning disabilities and possibly cancer. The waters near Massena have been the victim of years of industrialization that lined the riverbed with PCB’s DDT, Cadmium, mercury, chlordane, dihedron and dioxin. This legacy is seen in the fish and wildlife that we consume – they are laced with the same chemical cocktail. Although we have known about this problem for a good chunk of time, we haven’t made a good enough effort to clean it up even though we have the ability to do so.
