Coalition director calls for unity to protect GLRI

Can’t we all just get along?

Okay, we’re not talking here about Rodney King.

We’re talking about unity and how it is more important than ever if we are to maintain full funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

That was the word this morning as Jeff Skelding, director of the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition, kicked off the 7th annual Great Lakes Restoration Conference in Detroit.

The Coalition advocated for the creation and passage of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a program designed to speed clean up of toxic sites, restore fish and wildlife habitat and prevent new invasive species from arriving.

President Obama and Congress have provided $775 million for the GLRI over the past two years, but the program faces budget cuts.

Skelding said the coalition must stay strong to protect the GLRI.  “We’re going to need this coalition more than ever in the coming years,” he said.
