Great Lakes Day was a tremendous success! In February, around 100 Coalition members and partners met with lawmakers in Washington D.C. to advocate for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and other Coalition priorities. We’ve heard great things from participants this year – we’re proud to have strong support on Great Lakes issue from both sides of the aisle.

To top it off, we’re already seeing the results of everyone’s hard work. As of today, the U.S. House of Representatives sign on letter in support of bringing the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative up to $300 million for FY16 has 51 sign-ons! This is the highest number of co-signers on this letter in GLRI history and shows the incredible work our Coalition members are able to do at Great Lakes Day and throughout the year.

Some highlights from Great Lakes Day 2015:

-The HOW Coalition increased our success through social media with more participation than ever before!  Many members of Congress and attendees to Great Lakes Day tweeted about the event or posted about their participation on facebook. You can find more Great Lakes Days photos on our flickr account, here.

-The Joyce Foundation announced a new website which showcases the success of the GLRI throughout the Great Lakes Region. This new website features several stellar videos of stories in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and New York. These videos are powerful tools to educate members of Congress on the benefits of the GLRI – we encourage you to check them out! You can also find these videos and more on our video success story page.

-Participants from the HOW Coalition and the Great Lakes Commission attended the annual reception at the Canadian Embassy which included a warm welcome from the Ambassador of Canada himself, Gary Doer.

-The Great Lakes Commission hosted a well-attended Congressional Breakfast that featured remarks from many members of Congress – Senators and Representatives from both sides of the aisle voiced their support for the Great Lakes. Members who spoke included Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), and Reps. David Joyce (R-Ohio), Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), Mike Kelly (R-Pa.), Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), and Sean Duffy (R-Wis.).

We’re excited to continue the momentum that came out of this year’s Great Lakes Day! You can always find the latest Coalition updates here on our blog, on our twitter account, or on our facebook page.
