Wanted: A Great Lakes president

The 8th annual Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition’s Great Lakes Restoration conference kicked off Tuesday morning in downtown Cleveland.

Campaign Director Jeff Skelding opened the conference by celebrating increased federal funding for Great Lakes programs and calling on the presidential candidates to commit to protecting the lakes.

“We need the next president to carry the torch for Great Lakes restoration,” Skelding said.

The HOW Coalition has asked President Obama and Mitt Romney to sign the Great Lakes Protection and Restoration Candidate Pledge. The pledge calls for maintaining funding for Great Lakes restoration and building a barrier in the Chicago Waterway System that would keep Asian carp from storming the Great Lakes.

Neither of the candidates have signed the pledge. Read the pledge here.
