Tell Congress to Enact President Obama’s Historic Great Lakes Commitment
President Obama recently announced $475 million in his budget for Great Lakes Restoration – an effort that is critical to creating jobs and reviving our economy. The catch is that Congress holds the purse strings through their budget resolution and the annual appropriations process.
That’s where you come in.

Sign a Petition to Congress on the Great Lakes
Freshwater Future (formerly Great Lakes Aquatic Habitat Network and Fund) has initiated an online petition urging Members of Congress to act this year to pass and fully fund legislation to protect and restore the Great Lakes. Healing Our Waters Coalition staff worked closely with Freshwater Future on the development of this petition, and we encourage one and all to sign it and forward to colleagues, friends, and family. Freshwater Future and the HOW Coalition will work to tally signatures from constituents of particular members of Congress in the Great Lakes and deliver the petitions at in-district events during the Read More » »
Petition your Legislator
How You Can Help
The most effective way you can communicate with your U.S. Representative and Senators is by sending them a hand-written letter. Currently, the Healthy Lakes, Healthy Lives campaign is running a petition drive to urge elected officials to restore the Great Lakes.
Below is the petition. We encourage you to send it to your elected officials. We also urge you to complete the Presidential candidate petition.
If you don’t have time to send a hand-written letter, please contact us and we will add you to the list of citizens who have signed on to the list.

ACTION ALERT: Support Healthy Lakes for Healthy Lives
The Great Lakes are essential to the economic and cultural identity of our region. Forty-two million people depend on the Great Lakes for their drinking water.
Today, the health of our lakes is seriously threatened by problems such as untreated sewage and invasive species.
The good news is we have manageable solutions to these problems. The Great Lakes Collaboration Implementation Act is a comprehensive plan to modernize sewage treatment, clean-up polluted harbors, restore wetlands, and prevent unwanted, new species from invading the lakes. Each of these steps is essential if we are to restore the lakes and safeguard our Great Lakes way Read More » »
ACTION ALERT: Urge Members To Co-Sponsor Asian Carp Barrier Legislation
Congress has introduced much-needed legislation to prevent Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. This legislation authorizes the completion of an electronic barrier to keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. The threat to our family experiences like fishing and boating on the Great Lakes is enormous. Forget cutting your feet on zebra mussels; imagine having your teeth knocked out after getting clobbered by a flying 40-pound Asian carp. And the fragile Great Lakes ecosystem will receive the ultimate knockout blow when the voracious filter feeders literally suck the life out of the lakes.
